ERGONOMIC WORKSTATIONS TO IMPROVE HEALTH AND CONCENTRATION IN THE OFFICE
Sitting too many hours is bad for your health. A great many jobs, mostly office jobs, require sitting for many hours, and there are not many alternatives to be able to do otherwise. Maintaining an incorrect sitting position for many hours in a row can cause back pain and other joint problems that develop into chronic pain over time.
According to a recent German study regarding living habits in Germany, a study conducted by the Health Insurance Company Deutsche Krankenversicherung – DKV – together with the German Sport University in Cologne, the German population spends more and more time sitting, and it’s a safe bet that the habits of Italians, in this respect, are not so different either: the amount of time people spend sitting every day is in fact steadily increasing. On workdays, the classic week from Monday to Friday, people spend an average of 9.2 hours sitting, half an hour more than in 2021; in 2015 it was only 7.5 hours a day … so this “trend” is absolutely increasing year by year.
Sitting for long periods of time has a serious impact on our health, not only with regard to our bones and spine, but also increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, and type 2 diabetes; if we even do it with poor posture, our bodies are put under so much strain that over time it will lead to chronic pain.
What to do to sit less (or sit better) during our working day?
We need to find solutions and alternatives to remedy this problem. We have talked about some simple exercises to do during working hours here.
But in addition to these exercises that we recommend you follow, in order to assume a correct posture during our work, the following are important the desks and work tables on which we spend most of our day-and this is where theergonomics, on which ITEM bases all of its designs dedicated office and supplies for industries and businesses.
Sitting correctly and working ergonomically: how to make sure you are sitting in the right position

The workstation is critical: desk and seat should both be ergonomically designed.
Only in this way can we prevent physical exertion that is harmful to our health. ITEM applies these principles to all its projects, mixing ergonomics, design through the modular modules with manual assembly, which, with simplicity, go to ensure throughout our working day postural positions always correct, without having to distract us from what we are doing.
The ITEM workbench system and the extensive program of standard supplies offered, allows for multiple customized configurations, to be adapted both to classic office work and for those sectors dedicated to manual production.
ITEM and the ergonomics study dedicated to industry
By working on specially designed workstations, taking into account human interaction with that specific module or complement, all workers will be able to operate in a healthy and stress-free manner, but also be more accurate and productive. Ergonomics is crucial, especially when it comes to production and manual assembly, in factories or large industries, where workers are forced to repeat the same movements over and over again each day.
Ergonomic workstations: workbenches and chairs that help maintain proper posture
ITEM is a world leader in the design of ergonomic solutions for industry. For example, the ergonomic chair in ITEM’s Work Bench system promotes dynamic sitting by allowing staff to change their position and posture frequently, so that one side of the body is never overworked and specific muscle groups are not overstressed.
It is in these types of projects that we see the interaction between environmental ergonomics, that is, concerning our work environment as a whole, and thebehavioral ergonomics. Behavioral ergonomics is about acting in line with ergonomic principles: important, for example, is a type of seat that moves synchronously and can also be tilted slightly forward, and can rotate. The backrest of the chair should also be fully adjustable so that it can be adjusted to fit your body, so as to keep tension in your lower back under control.
In particular, chairs, seats and seats designed for purely industrial use should have wheels with brakes, which are activated once under load: a technology this reduces the risk of accidents at work, without compromising mobility in any way.
Of course, not only ergonomics but also functional design: a high-quality seat should include a durable upholstery, made of durable material that is easy to clean and resistant to lubricants or detergents.
ITEM’s height-adjustable workbench system.
Height-adjustable workbenches from ITEM help people move from sitting to standing, providing movement that not only helps blood circulation but also concentration at work. The ITEM workbench system are ideal for increasing well-being in the office or in factories/industries, as all components are designed to ensure that flexible and ergonomic workbenches can be configured for manual production: they raise and lower to one’s liking, helping to perform healthy body movement that helps maintain proper body posture. Electric height adjustment simplifies the transition between different heights; this type of industry products are also equipped with intelligent memory that help users save their personal settings and easily reset them.
ITEM’s is currently the only industrial workbench system to have received the quality seal of theInitiative for the well-being of the spine. – AGR registered association.

All these expedients we have discussed are just some of the important aspects to keep in mind to ensure a good health at work, but not the only ones. They are indeed also to be considered:
- the supply of materials
- the storage of instruments
- lighting
There are already many companies that have begun to adopt ergonomic measures to prevent health problems to their co-workers and employees. Has your company already started this adaptation work or is it still far from the goal? At UTR, we can help you choose, design and assemble workbenches, seating and ergonomic solutions for you and your business.
